Because my teacher (William A. Mathieu) and my teacher&#8217;s teacher (Easley Blackwood) were and are leaders in the field&#8230;<br><br>Microtonality refers to the utilization of musical intervals that are smaller than a semitone, which represents the smallest interval in standard Western twelve-tone equal temperament tuning. These intervals are often characterized as notes that lie &#8220;between the keys&#8221; of a piano. Microtonality involves employing non-standard tuning systems to explore novel harmonic relationships, a practice commonly observed in various non-Western musical traditions, blues bending techniques, and experimental Western music. This approach to music allows for the creation of rich and complex tonal landscapes, offering a departure from traditional Western harmonies.<br><br>I generally consider myself to be an &#8220;equal temperament guy&#8221;. But I do think it&#8217;s interesting, sometimes in composition it can help you split hairs between what&#8217;s the best note to come next ought to be.
