Angine De Poitrine (Chest Pain)

Sometimes I’m asked about Microtonal music. Because my teacher (William A. Mathieu) and my teacher’s teacher (Easley Blackwood) were and are leaders in the field…

Microtonality refers to the utilization of musical intervals that are smaller than a semitone, which represents the smallest interval in standard Western twelve-tone equal temperament tuning. These intervals are often characterized as notes that lie “between the keys” of a piano. Microtonality involves employing non-standard tuning systems to explore novel harmonic relationships, a practice commonly observed in various non-Western musical traditions, blues bending techniques, and experimental Western music. This approach to music allows for the creation of rich and complex tonal landscapes, offering a departure from traditional Western harmonies.

I generally consider myself to be an “equal temperament guy”. But I do think it’s interesting, sometimes in composition it can help you split hairs between what’s the best note to come next ought to be. But I digress what this post is really about is sharing the new band from Quebec: Angine De Poitrine.

Their groovy and loopy and gaining in popularity and that’s both refreshing and surprising.
